What makes this one so great is how different it is from those that came before and after. Related: One Piece: Why Are the Marines So Awful?Īnother One Piece film that could almost take the crown is Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island. His relationship with Aokiji is especially touching. His origin as a Marine Admiral who trained most of the officers fans were familiar with - as well as being friends with series favorites like Garp and Sengoku - make Z feel like an actual part of the story rather than a non-canon movie villain. His backstory is sympathetic (rather rare with One Piece villains) and his motivations are clearly defined. It follows the Straw Hats' journey to stop a former Marine Admiral from destroying the New World after he attacks their crew.įans enjoyed this film largely due to how the villain, Z, is portrayed. One Piece: Film Z is considered by plenty of fans to be the best film in the franchise and was the first one released after Strong World. Their battle against big mom kicks off what feels like the start of One Piece's endgame.Just because Strong World is the best doesn't mean that there aren't other One Piece movies that come close to its greatness. This is also the first time we see how the Straw Hats fare against one of the pirate Warlords, who feel like the final bosses of One Piece's world. We learn about his rough upbringing (by what are essentially Nazi power rangers), as well as the Legacy of Big Mom and her seemingly infinite family of children. This arc took a man who was arguably the most one-note character on the crew, and fleshed him out into one of the most interesting. First with Usopp and Robin in Enies Lobby, and here with Sanji in Whole Cake Island. Some of the most compelling moments of One Piece come from times when it seems like one of the members is leaving the crew. Fearing the consequences of what might happen if he doesn't go through with it, he leaves the Straw Hats behind. To this day, many people consider it to be the best arc in the entire series.Īfter the events of Dressrosa, things take a shocking twist when Sanji learns he's to be part of an arranged marriage to the daughter of Big Mom, one of the most powerful figures in One Piece's world. The amount of shocking revelations, rewarding payoffs, and emotional steaks during this arc are unmatched. The events of this arc would not only forever change Luffy as a character, but the world of One Piece as a whole. All the events that take place at Marineford feel like a grand climactic moment that the entire series had been building up to since the beginning. Luffy's quest to save his brother would eventually take him to the Marineford military base where a violent war ensues among the pirates and Marines. This arc also introduces several new characters such Boa Hancock, and Jimbei, who both go on to play important roles in the future of One Piece. Their hilarious dynamic makes for a nice contrast to the disturbing horrors of the prison. While there, he forms an escape crew with a handful of villains from previous arcs, including buggy, Mr. After learning his brother Ace has been captured by the world government, he journeys to the hellish Marine Prison known as impel down. So much happens during the arcs, Impel Down and Marineford, that you could write multiple articles and essays about this point in the One Piece timeline alone. This arc also gave us the crew's awesome cola-powered cyborg, Franky.Īfter the events of Sabaody, the Straw Hats were separated on random islands, and the story focused on a Luffy without the support of his crew. One that ends with the Straw Hats declaring war against the entire world government in one of the most emotionally powerful moments in the entire One Piece Saga. The crews desperate attempt to save her results in a bombastic climax. Things only get worse after Robin betrays the crew to strike out on her own, and gets captured by the Navy to be executed. It ends in shockingly brutal and heartbreaking battle between Luffy and Usopp, resulting with him leaving the crew. Usopp's insecurities over not pulling his weight bubble to the surface after he and Luffy can't agree about what to do with their dying ship the going Merry. Tensions among the crew explode, as we're given the first real internal conflict among the Straw Hat crew. The story up to this point is still great, but it's the events of this arc that cemented One Piece as a true masterpiece. Water 7 and Enies Lobby mark true high points in the series, and some consider it to be the best arcs in all of One Piece. These could be considered separate arcs, but they blend together so seamlessly that it makes more sense to combine them.
